Smart Tech Howest meets the industry 2024

It's that time again. The teams of Energy Management, Sustainable Energy Management, Internet of Things, Digital Design/Web Development & Design, Multimedia & Creative Technology as well as Creative Technologies & AI are organizing Smart Tech Howest meets the industry on Thursday, June 20, 2024 in Kortrijk, the event where alumni and professionals are brought together for an exciting evening of student projects, short talks and networking.

1. Short Tech Talks

Between 5pm and 7pm, our instructors will give you a nice offering of several short Tech Talks on contemporary technologies covered in our courses. Each session lasts 15 minutes and we offer 2 sessions. Every half hour you can attend another session. Please note, the number of places per session is limited, so register early! This session is free of charge. All sessions are in Dutch.

Sessie A: 5G, een stand van zaken!

Wat is er nu eigenlijk al uitgerold van de 5G technologie?

Welke toepassingen kunnen we nu al realiseren? Een paar use-cases van uit het 5G lab van Howest en daarbuiten.

Sessie B: Applied IoT voor datacaptatie

Datacaptatie is noodzakelijk voor de uitbouw van een smart home, smart cities of smart factory. Via een Edge device kunnen we de data van verschillende bronnen centraliseren, preprocessen,... en versturen naar de cloud.
Heb je echter verschillende Edge devices staan dan is een remote management systeem noodzakelijk. In deze demo laten we zien hoe we via Azure IoT Edge runtime onze Edge devices remote kunnen beheren.

Sessie C: Netwerken in een smart home

Als technicus kom je naast het elektrische aspect ook in aanraking met netwerken bij klanten. Hoe pak je een netwerk aan bij een klant? Wat is segmentatie, hoe beveilig je netwerken en waarom is dat nodig?

In deze sessie bespreken we de do's & dont's zodat je een inzicht krijgt in de stand van zaken van veilige netwerken voor klanten.

Sessie D: Intro tot Generative AI

ChatGPT is niet meer weg te denken uit de media. Maar dit AI model is slechts één voorbeeld uit de Generatieve AI familie.

In deze sessie gaan we in op de basis van wat Generatieve AI is en hoe taalmodellen werken. We bekijken wat hun limitaties zijn en proberen in te schatten wat hun invloed zal zijn op onze toekomst.

Sessie E: Native web transitions

Met de nieuwe View Transition API krijgen we de mogelijkheid om op een relatief eenvoudige manier vloeiende overgangen tussen verschillende onderdelen of pagina's van een web applicatie te maken. En dat zonder complexe javascript of externe libraries. We tonen je hoe dit werkt.

Sessie F: MLOps

Hoe krijg je een AI model in productie? Waar hou je best rekening mee als je een eigen gemaakt model aan je eindgebruikers ter beschikking wil stellen? Met MLOps kan je jouw AI modellen automatiseren van data verwerking tot en met de deployment. Cloud tools helpen ons om on-demand servers op te spinnen, optimaal te benutten en maar te betalen voor de tijd die nodig is.

Sessie G: Welke hardware kies je voor AI

Er worden heel wat AI-toepassingen ontwikkeld en in productie gezet, maar welke hardware heb je hiervoor nodig? We geven je een overzicht. Hoe doen de grote jongens zoals ChatGPT het? Kies je voor cloud computing of on-premises, en welke kosten komen hierbij kijken?

Sessie H: Slimme energieoplossingen met AI

In deze sessie verkennen we de AI-pipeline binnen de energiewereld, geïllustreerd met praktische use cases. We bespreken hoe energiedata wordt verzameld en voorbereid voor AI-algoritmes, en welke resultaten we kunnen bereiken met deze modellen.
Leer hoe deze technologieën bijdragen aan innovatieve, efficiënte en duurzame energieoplossingen voor jouw organisatie.

2. Meet students realizing innovative projects i.c.w. work field partners

Students have realized many innovative projects over the past year, mostly in collaboration with the field. Come and discover the many beautiful realizations of our students.
You can view the student projects continuously from 5pm to 7pm.

Web Development and Design Students

WDD students have been doing internships in companies for the past few weeks. They present their work using a poster exhibition. Engage in conversation with the students about their accomplishments.

Students Energy Management

These students are helping make the energy transition a reality. How can you smartly control your charging station? What technical solution did they work out during energy audits of companies?

Final works IoT students

The students in the graduate internet of things also realize a project for their company during their internship. You can see the results during this event. The students will be happy to explain more about their project.

Project One - 1MCT & 1CTAI

Project One is the first integration module of students from 1MCT and 1CTAI. Students work on their first project independently with coaching from the instructors. They choose their own topic to work on. Project management, maker lab, smart devices, ... Discover the surprising results during this event.

Industry Project - 2MCT

The Industry Project, a 4-5 week course, is the capstone of the second year of MCT. The knowledge gained from the previous modules is put into practice during these project weeks in an external business case.
The projects are in the context of web development, AI & machine learning, XR Development and IoT.

3. Netwerking and foodtruck

After the Short Tech Talks and discovering innovative student projects, it's time to fortify inner person with a burger and a drink.

Have an interesting conversation with a student, teacher or researcher or network with students, alumni or work field partners.

From 6:30 p.m. our food truck opens (a volonté) and from 8 p.m. we provide ice cream.
This part is not free, for this you pay a contribution of €20 (burgers and fries a volonté, a drink and an ice cream). Registering and paying in advance is necessary for the practical organization of the food truck!

Drinks at the bar can only be paid with Payconiq, we do not accept cash.
