The policies of Howest are aimed at supporting study departments and services with mutual commitment to their selection of projects that contribute to the realisation of Howest's vision.
A High-performance management team inspires staff members, facilitates the proper functioning of the organisation, and monitors the realisation of strategic goals.
Howest has adopted a sound financial policy within the contours made available to it by the government and encourages its staff to generate extra resources through research and service provision.
Balanced, data-informed policies support administrative and quality assurance processes.
The functioning of study department clusters and services, in particular the cross-horizontal cooperation between them, is further shaped and adjusted where necessary.
Howest University of Applied Sciences identifies, connects and professionalises the expertise and talents of its staff. To this end, much is invested in professionalisation tracks that meet the needs of the organisation and its staff.
The policy of Howest is aimed at strengthening the physical, mental and social well-being of its students and staff as well as that of others within the community. Through the Healthy Howest programme, Howest facilitates them, from a holistic approach, in making conscious, healthy choices.
For its study programmes and services, Howest refines the transparent quality assurance cycle in line with the organisational model and the quality requirements of the stakeholders.

Howest cultivates a modern and attractive learning and research environment.

Howest creates a real professional context with authentic learning situations that takes into account the competencies already acquired, the intended goal and the social, cultural and linguistic context of the student.
Howest maximally valorises the value of previously acquired qualifications and competencies and, by doing so, creates attractive (follow-up) tracks and the shortest possible time-to-graduation.
For its students, Howest pursues an optimal study choice and study progress. Flexible study tracks allow the student to develop his talents to a maximum degree, in line with his level of ambitions. The student gradually takes control of his own learning process.
A wide range of guidance tools allows a diversified inflow of students to acquire the desired competencies.
The choices within the learning environment are based on evidence-informed educational research. These choices ensure an increase in flexibility and effectiveness of learning and are supported by educational technology, learning analytics and a strong interaction with the work field.
Howest aims for a learning and research environment in which students and staff members have maximum opportunity to gain international/intercultural (learning) experiences.
Curricula are attuned to guarantee multidisciplinary cooperation with the work field.
Thematic research and service labs, in which infrastructure and expertise are shared, facilitate cooperation between stakeholders and secure the results, the cooperation with the study departments and the work field.
Centres of expertise for long-term research projects ensure a continuous innovation process and dissemination of knowledge. The results of these are integrated in the study programmes.
Howest staff members share their experiences and competencies with each other. They are active internal and external networkers who inspire and oxygenate the organisation.
The integrated and sustainably designed and managed campuses are the vibrant biotopes for the learning community of students, staff members and partners. They constitute physical and virtual open communities, they are meeting places that transcend strict learning and research. Making the facilities physically and virtually accessible to the maximum extent is a priority for the organisation.

In view of attracting new target groups and based on current insights into research and educational innovation, Howest is taking up a pioneering role. Howest does so by continuing to build up an up-to-date and innovative study programme and research portfolio.
Howest responds to the need for lifelong learning by developing relevant and tailor-made study programmes for a wide range of target groups and qualification levels.
Howest shares its expertise with its stakeholders. To this end, Howest develops valorisable knowledge and attunes it to challenges in the relevant regional work field. It translates knowledge and expertise into a format that is manageable for the end user.
Results from research and services are made widely accessible, linked to their context and enriched with metadata to maximally facilitate follow-up projects and further valorisation.
Howest wants to be a privileged partner in strong learning networks. To this end, Howest enters into sustainable, trust-based partnerships with international and regional experts, companies and non-profit organisations.
The work field is a structural partner at every level in the mapping and development of the study programme and research portfolio.

Proud member of RUN-EU

Sinds januari 2024 zijn we met Howest lid van de European University Alliantie RUN-EU (Regional University Network – European University). Dit internationaal partnerschap vertaalt zich in een dynamische en innovatieve omgeving op het gebied van onderzoeksprojecten, joint bachelor- en masterprogramma’s en kortlopende uitwisselingstrajecten voor studenten en personeel. De deelname aan RUN-EU biedt Howest toegang tot een netwerk van gelijkgestemde instellingen met een vergelijkbare schaalgrootte en een gedeelde visie en missie. Deze samenwerking stelt ons in staat om flexibel en snel in te spelen op nieuwe initiatieven die anders moeilijk te realiseren zouden zijn binnen de Vlaamse context.

In onze samenwerking streven we naar een geborgde organisatorische samenwerking met nadruk op de versterking van de quadruple helix met focus op regionale impact. Hierbij dienen we de samenwerkingen met regionale partners verder uit te bouwen en versterken. Met de deelname aan RUN-EU heeft Howest de ambitie om als referentie in Europese projecten erkend te worden. Daarnaast vormt ons lidmaatschap bij een European University Alliantie een accelerator om internationalisering in te bedden in de opleidingen. Door in alle onze curricula toekomstbestendige skills en vaardigheden te verankeren zorgen we er bovendien voor dat studenten op een duurzame manier kunnen bijdragen aan de economische, sociale, culturele en ecologische ontwikkelingen van de regio’s.

Bovendien zetten we in op de ontwikkeling van korte RUN-EU leertrajecten die niet alleen flexibele kansen bieden aan onze reguliere studenten maar die ook leermogelijkheden bieden voor onze regionale partners in het kader van levenslang leren. Bovendien biedt RUN-EU extra inspirerende en internationale kansen, zowel voor onderwijzend personeel, onderzoekers als stafmedewerkers en administratieve medewerkers.

Van bruisende campussen naar ecosystemen

De voorbije jaren realiseerde Howest geïntegreerde campussen in Brugge en Kortrijk. De duurzame, centraal gelegen en open campussen moeten een ontmoetingsplaats worden voor innovatie, creatie en leren van elkaar. Onderzoek en de resultaten ervan worden beter zichtbaar op onze campussen. De missiegedreven aanpak van onderzoek wordt vormgegeven met externe stakeholders waarbij voor specifieke uitdagingen ecosystemen opgezet worden met structurele partners die vanuit een gedeeld engagement de uitdagingen vanuit verschillende disciplines en invalshoeken benaderen. Op die manier wensen we de kans op effectieve implementatie van resultaten en de beoogde impact te maximaliseren.

Gezien de veranderende noden van de studenten en de steeds meer diverse doelgroep van studenten en lerenden moet ook de virtuele leeromgeving verder worden versterkt. De flexibiliteit waarmee we de mix van fysieke en virtuele leeromgevingen combineren en aanbieden, sluit aan bij de behoeften van de betrokkenen. Het draagt bij aan een dynamische en toegankelijke uitwisseling van kennis en ideeën in een bruisend ecosysteem.

De sterke samenwerking en netwerking moet ook bijdragen aan het creëren van een omgeving waarin iedereen zich welkom en ondersteund voelt. Door, in samenwerking met de verschillende actoren, onze leer- en onderzoeksomgeving continu te evalueren en te innoveren kunnen we, bovendien, beter inspelen op de behoeften van een diverse studentenpopulatie.

Duurzaam Howest

Howest staat voor duurzaamheid. We willen studenten en personeel inspireren en empoweren om op een duurzame manier bij te dragen aan de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling. Om die reden zijn we, in samenwerking met CIFAL Flanders, gestart met een traject om SDG pionieer te worden.

Om de reeds bestaande krachten te bundelen en om gedragenheid binnen de organisatie te creëren werd een duurzaamheidscoach aangesteld en een task force Duurzaam Howest opgericht met vertegenwoordiging uit het management, diensten en opleidingen. We streven ernaar om duurzaamheid in te bedden in onze dagelijkse organisatie, strategie, onderwijs én onderzoek.

Howest wil studenten klaarstomen om, vanuit een multidisciplinaire en holistische benadering, een verantwoordelijke rol op te nemen in duurzame ontwikkeling. We zetten daarom de komende jaren in op het verankeren van duurzaamheidscompetenties in ons onderwijsbeleid en in de professionalisering van onze medewerkers en studenten. We beogen professionals op te leiden die niet alleen vakinhoudelijk en technisch onderlegd zijn, maar ook maatschappelijk betrokken zijn en oplossingsgericht maar ook toekomstgericht denken. We streven naar futureproof opleidingsprogramma’s waar niet alleen ruimte is voor sectorspecifieke innovaties maar waar studenten ook zelf de duurzaamheidscompetenties en ondernemingszin krijgen aangeleerd.

In een wereld die geconfronteerd wordt met complexe maatschappelijke uitdagingen, is de nood aan fundamentele transities groter dan ooit. Innovatie vormt de sleutel tot het realiseren van deze transities. Met missiegedreven onderzoek beoogt Howest niet alleen bij te dragen aan wetenschappelijke vooruitgang, maar vooral ook aan concrete en toepasbare oplossingen die gekoppeld zijn aan de behoeften van de samenleving. We versterken ons praktijkgericht onderzoek met als doel een brede maatschappelijke meerwaarde te creëren.
