Of course you can. As a less-abled student you have the right, once you have received a dedicated status, to request certain adjustments (support measures) to help you overcome any specific issues you might have. Howest strives to open its doors to as many people as possible, to ensure every student is given maximum opportunity to grow. We will determine what you might need based on your personal, specific situation, always in collaboration with the campus and course team. For an overview of the kind of adjustments we can offer, please go to FAQ 2. There also is additional support and assistance available. What are adjustments? Students can, within reason, request customised adjustments (adjustments or support measures) to ensure equal chances when it comes to taking classes and exams. That way, everyone is able to fully participate in courses and pass exams. You could compare adjustments to the Sticordi measures in secondary education. Assessing the need for such adjustments will be done based on these criteria: Necessity: without these adjustments, the student is not able to fully take courses and exams. Feasibility: the adjustments cannot cause an imbalanced impact on the organisation Acceptance level: the adjustments are acceptable to all stakeholders: acceptable to the lecturer, feasible for the student and justifiable towards other students and the organisation Competence integrity: the adjustments cannot impact the envisaged final competences. Solely the process to be followed in order to achieve these competences, is adjusted. Given the diversity in our student population, adjustments are always decided on on a case-by-case basis. Every person and every situation is different. The study coach will be your first point of call, who will in turn confer with all stakeholders to find a solution everyone feels happy about, in compliance with the adjustments procedure. Not sure whether you are eligible for adjustments? Do not hesitate to contact your course’s study coach; you can find the contact details. Studycoaching What can I expect exactly regarding assistance at Howest? Our study coaches support students in three domains: Adjustments (Re)orientation Study coaching This support is flexible and customised to fit the student’s needs, but also taking the course context into account. The study coach can act as a liaison between the course team and the student. These are some of the principles our support options are based on: Autonomy and self-steering abilities of the student are pivotal The student is the experience expert Aiming for continuous growth in line with the students’ abilities throughout their academic career Extra attention to milestones in the student’s education, such as the switch from secondary education to higher education, bachelor’s thesis and apprenticeship. Via workshops or individual coaching, topics such as study ability, planning, fear of failure, etc. will be addressed. Individual coaching can take place as a one-off event or on a recurring basis, depending on the student’s needs. Study coaching is also provided within the course adjustments, for example monitoring, mentoring sessions and program coaching. Should students have requirements that we cannot help remediate, we can still offer external support. We aim to proactively detect the needs students might have but of course also rely on the student taking initiative themselves to contact us in case they experience such issues. Student activities In secondary school I had an after school sports pass. Does such pass exist at Howest? Sure, Stuvo offers a large choice of sports that are cheap to partake in. In Bruges you can buy a sports sticker which allows you to join plenty of sports classes, free fitness sessions and cheap entry to the swimming pool. Students in Kortrijk who buy a sportplus card will enjoy plenty of similar benefits! Discover more on our website or get in touch with saar.olivier [at] howest.be (Saar) (Brugge) or Geert (Kortrijk). Won’t I be missing out on the real student life when I choose Bruges or Kortrijk? No way you’ll miss out! Bruges and Kortrijk might not be the biggest student cities, compared to Ghent or Leuven that is, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun. Both Bruges and Kortrijk offer fantastic party places in the student areas and plenty of student events take place for you to let your hair down. The Student Welcome Concert traditionally starts off the year, followed by annual classics such as the Midnight Swim, Students on ice and 6hr run. Go to our website for more information. I have heard the wildest stories about student clubs… is this a place where friendships for life are forged or should I rather stay clear? Student clubs organise all kinds of events, help you with your study books and will tour you around the student bars. Feel like training those vocal cords in a cantus? Check out the student clubs at Howest and get in touch. Not all student clubs require new members to undergo an initiation; moreover, all student clubs have signed the Flemish Initiation Charter and comply with the Howest activity rules and regulations. You can rest assured: all will be just fine.
