Interior meets product design

Are you interested in designing interior objects and interior spaces, and do you want to learn how to bring them together into functional, aesthetic, and meaningful overall concepts with attention to materials, technology, ergonomics, and sustainability? Then the elective track Interior Product Design within the Bachelor of Industrial Product Design is perfect for you.

You will work creatively and hands-on: developing ideas and transforming them into feasible, sustainable solutions and interior products. You will experiment with form, materials, light, color, texture, and finishing, and learn to design through analysis, testing, and technical development.

You will design objects and spaces that are functional, ergonomic, and full of character, ranging from custom-made pieces to small-series production. In addition to specific applications for public and private spaces and work environments, future-oriented living plays an important role. You will learn to design smart, modular furniture and interiors that adapt to changing lifestyles, making living environments compact, flexible, and sustainable.

The Interior Product Design option is ideal for those who want to combine creativity with technology, sustainability, and aesthetics, and who aim to create interior concepts ready for the living environments of tomorrow.

Practical work is central to this creative program. In the design studios and prototyping workshops of the Industrial Design Center, you will experiment with woodworking, metalworking, and textile processing, as well as 3D printing, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, thermoforming, welding, and ceramics. You will also be challenged to test your concepts with users, prepare them for technical production, and refine them in terms of form, materials, color, and texture.

This programme is now also available in English.

Howest - Interieurdesign (keuzetraject van de bachelor Industrieel Productontwerpen)

A broad base

The first three semesters will provide you with a solid foundation: a broad set of skills that you will need to shape interiors and design objects.

You learn to work creatively and methodically. You focus on human components such as experience, ergonomics and interaction. You explore technical building blocks such as interior and production-oriented design. You learn to sketch, visualise and do storytelling.

And, of course, you will design your own interior and furniture project.

Programme

Semester 4: In-depth

Starting from semester four, you will build on the technical-creative foundation by broadening your focus to interiors and objects.

You will learn to delve deeper into private residential projects and beyond. For example, booth construction, public buildings and outdoor spaces. At the same time, you will explore interior objects. You design furnishings, lighting and accessories and bring them into small series or mass production.

Professionalisation

In the final year, you engage in a comprehensive project, complete an internship and work on a final project.

On top of that, we’ll help you launch a real start-up and work with you on an interdisciplinary project alongside students from fields like multimedia, digital design, and digital arts. In addition, we will set up a real start-up together with you and let you collaborate in an interdisciplinary project with students from other disciplines.

The personal development modules will help you through this creative journey. This is where you will focus on your personal and professional development as an interior designer.
