The x-CITE project promotes the development of the CitiVerse as a tool for human-centered transformation of smart cities. Through extended reality (XR), citizens are engaged in urban planning, social interaction, culture, and tourism.

This contributes to the objectives of Digital Europe by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the urban environment and advancing XR and metaverse technologies within the EU.

Physical and Virtual Worlds

The project follows the "quadruple helix" approach, where citizens, government, industry, and academia collaborate on urban solutions. This approach enhances citizen participation, promotes inclusivity, and creates a new urban paradigm in which physical and virtual worlds are integrated. A common framework for European authorities is being developed, with a focus on the inclusive, ethical, and interoperable adoption of virtual technologies to support decision-making.

The project will lead to recommendations for a federative architecture that enhances the capabilities of the CitiVerse. By collaborating with industry and smart city networks, it contributes to the EU's leadership in the CitiVerse, ensuring open, interoperable, and ethical solutions. Guidelines will be developed for user-centered solutions in the CitiVerse.

Outcome

Partners from Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Turkey are working together on the project. The outcome will be a set of open CitiVerse solutions and a roadmap with action points for the maturity, sustainability, and market readiness of CitiVerse solutions. The project aligns with EU initiatives in climate, smart cities, and communities, promoting innovation and supporting a green, citizen-focused urban future.
