Media outlets in Flanders are facing challenges in capturing the interest of Gen Z in news. They seem to be losing connection with young audiences. NewZ Lab is exploring possibilities to engage this demographic. It focuses on the current media consumption habits of young people. Gen Z primarily consumes news through 'side-door' sources such as Instagram and TikTok, moving away from traditional channels. They are less actively seeking news; it simply appears in their feed alongside other posts. To remain relevant in this flow of information, NewZ Lab aims to create tailored content specifically for Gen Z. This may include delivering news through AR filters and effects for Instagram. The key objectives are to keep the production process accessible and manageable for editorial teams and to explore how contemporary revenue models can ensure the financial sustainability of media outlets in Flanders.
