Make sure you don't get hacked

How do I make sure I don't get hacked?

Cybercriminals are increasingly trying to get in by getting you to click on a link. Clicking on a fake link is enough to give them access to your laptop and all your Howest data.

How to recognise fake e-mails? https://safeonweb.be/en/learn-identify-fake-e-mails
IMPORTANT: when in the slightest doubt, NEVER give your password. Through your password, they will gain access to all your Howest data and also find their way to even more Howest information.
Wondering how good you are at picking out suspicious messages? Then take the following quiz: https://safeonweb.be/en/participation/add/55

If you receive a suspicious e-mail, do not click and immediately forward the e-mail to the helpdesk via helpdesk [at] howest.be (helpdesk[at]howest[dot]be). The ICT team can prevent others from falling into the trap and avoid worse.

If you did click, notify the helpdesk immediately via helpdesk [at] howest.be (helpdesk[at]howest[dot]be). They will immediately give you the following tips and help you with this:

  • Have you communicated a password?
  • Was a program possibly installed?
    • Run a virus scan and, if necessary, reset the device to factory settings
  • Delete the message
  • Have you disclosed bank details?
    • Notify your bank and Cardstop immediately (078 / 170 170, keep this number in your contacts)
    • File a complaint with the police
  • Has the message been forwarded to your friends?
    • Notify them!
