English-taught semesters, what are they?

An English-taught semester is a coherent package of course units which a Howest Bachelor programme offers in English, as an option for semester exchange , to incoming students from its partner universities abroad, and as a study abroad option to other international students. Many of those English-taught course units are also attended by local Howest students, whereas all the other course units of their BA programme are offered in Dutch. Dutch is the official language in Flanders and the main teaching language at Howest.  We often refer to our English-taught semesters as ‘international semesters’, given their global focus and/or international public combined with the English-medium teaching.

Some of our English-taught semester programmes consist of course units which together amount to 30 ECTS credits, the full standard semester load in European higher education. Those English-taught semesters of 30 ECTS do not contain any choice options for students who need the full 30 ECTS semester load. Others count more than 30 ECTS credits in course units and thus provide choice options.

Selecting courses from different English-taught semesters is only possible if both programmes are organised on the same campus ánd if their schedules allow it. Schedules are only available shortly before the start of the semester.

English-taught semesters as Postgraduate Certificate programmes

howest illustraties_toekomst cropped.png

Several Dutch-taught Howest bachelor programmes teach one or two semesters in English in order to welcome students from their international partner universities for an exchange semester or year.  Some of those bachelor programmes also offer their English-taught semester(s) as Postgraduate Certificate programmes (in Dutch “Postgraduaat”), and can thus select each year a limited number of non-exchange students (not affiliated with a Howest partner school) to attend them. Under here you find the full list.

English-taught semesters also offered as  Postgraduate Certificate programmes in 2021-2022

In order to be eligible, the non-exchange students must meet the Howest English proficiency requirements and have a bachelor degree at minimum.  In most cases, the bachelor degree of the applicant must include knowledge and competences directly related to the specific study field of the English-taught semester at Howest. You will find more information about specific requirements on the webpage of the Postgraduate Certificate programme itself (see programme list above).  All applications for English-taught semesters as Postgraduate Certificate programmes are subject to approval by the Howest admissions team. We strive for a well-balanced composition of the English-taught semester groups in terms of participant profiles due to our hands-on approach with numerous team assignments and projects. This will be taken into account during the selections.

The tuition fee for each of the Postgraduate Certificate semester programmes is mentioned on the webpage of the programme itself.

Please note that our English-taught Semester/Postgraduate Certificate programmes are not in themselves degree programmes. Because of their nature and short duration, an admission letter for those programmes is often not sufficient for the Belgian Consular Offices to grant the applicant the necessary entrance visa to Belgium, which has far-reaching requirements.

Non-exchange students can apply for the Postgraduate Certificate (or any other) programmes via howest.be/apply-now, from where they can follow either the international or the domestic application track. Howest charges an application processing fee of 75 EUR to all students applying with an international diploma (not obtained in Belgium). The application fee is fully refundable after your final registration at Howest, but non-refundable for applicants who don’t get selected or don’t make it to Howest.

Application deadlines for the English-taught semesters as Postgraduate Certificate programmes are the same ones that apply for the incoming exchange students. You find them here

Our Exchange study at Howest page contains useful information blocks for non-exchange students too, starting from Accommodation, visa requirements, insurance, and all items below.
