English-taught semesters, what are they?

An English-taught semester is a coherent package of course units which a Howest bachelor's programme offers in English to incoming students from its partner universities abroad and as a study abroad option to other international students. Many of these English-taught courses are attended by local Howest students as well, whereas all the other courses of their Ba programme are given in Dutch. Dutch is the official language in Flanders and the primary teaching language at Howest.  We often refer to our English-taught semesters as ‘international semesters’, given their global focus and international public combined with the English-medium teaching.

Some of our English-taught semester programmes consist of course units that together amount to 30 ECTS credits, the full standard semester load in European higher education. The English-taught semesters with 30 ECTS do not contain any elective options for students who need the full 30 ECTS semester load. Others, though, count for more than 30 ECTS credits and therefore provide elective options.

Selecting courses from different English-taught semesters is only possible if both programmes are organised on the same campus, and if the schedules are compatible. Schedules are only made available shortly before the start of the semester.  So the safest option, especially for students who need to be sure of their study programme at Howest in advance, is to stick to one English-taught semester programme.

Bachelor of Digital Arts and Entertainment

Digital Arts and Entertainment (DAE) is an award winning, internationally focused, English-taught bachelor’s degree.

DAE has been crowned best game design and development school in the world three times in the last five years (2021-2018-2017) by The Rookies World School Rankings®, making DAE a top international player in game design and art education.  Howest DAE is ranked #25 in the 2022 Princeton (USA) Review’s Top 50 of Game Design Undergraduate programmes.

Our curriculum consists of 180 ECTS credits in a 3-year structure and offers six majors to choose from:

  1. Game Graphics Production (GGP)
  2. Game Development (GD)
  3. Independent Game Production (IGP)
  4. Interactive Sound Production (ISP)
  5. Visual Effects (VFX)
  6. 3D Animation

The industry is built on passion, commitment, and hard work. You will need these 3 qualities if you want to succeed at DAE.

On top of that, as an exchange student, there are a few things you should consider when composing your Learning Agreement and choosing your course units:

  1. Choose course units from maximum 2 different majors. You can find detailed information of all DAE courses and majors on the DAE website.
  2. Make sure you have the necessary knowledge to follow a course. When choosing a second-year course, make sure you master the right prerequisites. You can check the prerequisites. (e.g. When choosing 3D3 in the VFX major, you need to have the skills of 3D 1 AND 3D 2 AND 3D Pipeline.)
  3. When joining DAE during the Spring semester, you can only choose courses from semesters 2 and 4.
  4. When joining DAE during the Autumn semester, you can only choose courses from semesters 1, 3 and 5.

Lastly, the moment you become part of DAE you become a member of its community – a vibrant, international community where you are free to attend a wide range of activities, study nights, student-led workouts, workshops…

With the support of a community team, we pledge to our students our commitment to upholding a campus culture of open-mindedness, inclusivity, acceptance, and connection.
Each of us brings a different story to DAE – we look forward to hearing yours!

English-taught semesters as Postgraduate Certificate programmes

Several Dutch-taught bachelor's programmes at Howest offer English-taught semesters in order to welcome students from international partner universities for an exchange semester (30 ects) or year (60 ects). Three of those bachelor's programmes also offer their English-taught semester(s) as postgraduate certificate programmes. Each year they select a limited number of students not affiliated with a Howest partner school to attend them. You can find the list below.

English-taught semesters offered as postgraduate certificate programmes in 2022-2023

* Students who do not need a visa to study in Belgium (from EEA countries) can choose between the semester or year programme.  Students from outside the EEA, who thus need a visa to study in Belgium, must take up the full year programme in order to be eligible for the Belgian study visa. Please note that, given the nature of these programmes (non-degree & short track), it can happen that a Belgian consular office does not grant a visa for them.

In order to be eligible, students must meet the Howest English proficiency requirements and have at least a bachelor's degree.  You will find more information about specific requirements on the webpage of the postgraduate certificate programme itself (see programme list above).

All applications for English-taught semesters as postgraduate certificate programmes are subject to approval by the Howest admissions team. Due to our hands-on approach with numerous team assignments and projects, we strive for a well-balanced mix within the English-taught semester groups in terms of participant profiles. This will be taken into account during the selections.

The tuition fee for each of the postgraduate certificate semesters is mentioned on the programme's webpage.

Please note that our English-taught semester/postgraduate certificate programmes are not degree programmes.

Non-exchange students can apply for the postgraduate certificate and other programmes via From there you can follow either the international or the domestic application track.

Howest charges an application processing fee of 50 EUR which is non-refundable.

Application deadlines for the English-taught semesters as postgraduate certificate programmes are the same as those that apply for the incoming exchange students. You can find them here.

Our Exchange Study at Howest page contains useful information for non-exchange students too, such as accommodation, visa requirements, insurance, and more.
